A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station WEST MYSTIC, MYSTIC RIVER (NOAA 8460751). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 2.7 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Mystic come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8460751, WEST MYSTIC, MYSTIC RIVER. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 2.7 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 3.5 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 1.9 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 154 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.6 ft on January 22, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 3.6 ft on October 1, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

A small river tide at the east end of the Sound

The Mystic River rises and falls only 2.7 ft on an average day, against 6.4 ft at New Haven. Eastern Connecticut is close to where the Atlantic tide enters Long Island Sound through the Race and Fishers Island Sound, and the range is smallest there before it grows westward. For the river's marinas and the seaport's wharves, the change between low and high is a couple of feet, with the strongest currents in the narrows.

Neighbors on the same water

NOAA's New London State Pier station, under seven miles west, is the reference for several places nearby: the Pawcatuck River at Westerly runs about 20 minutes ahead of New London, and the Niantic River close to an hour behind it. Watch Hill Point, on the Rhode Island side, is predicted from Newport with high water 41 minutes later and about three quarters of Newport's height. Silver Eel Pond on Fishers Island, across the sound, has its own reference station.

Paddling and the drawbridge reach

For a kayak or small boat on the river, the tide matters less for depth than for the current under the bridges and in the narrow reaches, which runs with the flood and the ebb. Going up the river on the flood and returning on the ebb is the easy way. The lowest low of the period is -0.6 ft, on January 22, 2027; the highest high 3.6 ft, on October 1, 2027.

Highest and lowest tides at Mystic, 2026 to 2027

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Mystic?

The highest tide predicted at WEST MYSTIC, MYSTIC RIVER between October 2026 and December 2027 is 3.6 ft above MLLW, on October 1, 2027 at 10:18 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 3.0 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Mystic get negative low tides?

Yes. On 154 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.6 ft on January 22, 2027 at 3:09 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Mystic?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Is the Mystic tide the same as New London?

Close but not identical. West Mystic and New London State Pier are both NOAA reference stations, under seven miles apart near the eastern end of Long Island Sound, and both have a small range of roughly two to three feet. For the Mystic River itself use this page; for the Thames River and New London harbor use the New London station.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
