Plan around the tide at Chatham

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station Chatham, Stage Harbor (NOAA 8447505). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 4.3 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Chatham come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8447505, Chatham, Stage Harbor. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 4.3 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 5.3 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 3.3 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 131 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.6 ft on December 25, 2026. The highest predicted tide of that period is 5.5 ft on November 26, 2026. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

One town, three different tides

Chatham sits where Cape Cod turns north, and its waters belong to three systems. Stage Harbor, the station on this page, opens south onto Nantucket Sound and averages 4.3 ft from low to high. Chatham Harbor, behind the barrier beaches on the ocean side, has its own NOAA station at Aunt Lydia's Cove under two miles away. And Pleasant Bay to the north is predicted by NOAA from Boston with high water about two and a half hours later and a third of Boston's range, because the tide has to work its way in through the breaks in the outer beach.

So a boater leaving Stage Harbor, a kayaker in Pleasant Bay and someone fishing at the fish pier in Chatham Harbor can see high water hours apart on the same afternoon. Pick the station that matches where you will be.

Sound side flats and the harbor entrance

Along the Nantucket Sound shore, from Harding's Beach toward Monomoy, the tide uncovers sandy flats, and the channel into Stage Harbor shoals at low water. To the west, Wychmere Harbor and Dennis Port are predicted from Boston with high water roughly an hour later and well under half of Boston's range. The lowest low predicted at Stage Harbor this period is -0.6 ft, on December 25, 2026.

Shifting sands

Chatham's outer beaches move: inlets open in storms and close again over years, and the shoals off Monomoy change shape constantly. Tide predictions describe the water level, not where the sand is this season. The Cape Cod tide comparison shows Chatham next to Provincetown, Plymouth, Hyannis and Nantucket.

Highest and lowest tides at Chatham, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Chatham, Stage Harbor between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Chatham?

The highest tide predicted at Chatham, Stage Harbor between October 2026 and December 2027 is 5.5 ft above MLLW, on November 26, 2026 at 12:40 PM. An ordinary higher high reaches 4.6 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Chatham get negative low tides?

Yes. On 131 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.6 ft on December 25, 2026 at 6:49 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Chatham?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Which Chatham tide station should I use for Pleasant Bay?

Not Stage Harbor. NOAA predicts Pleasant Bay from the Boston gauge with high water about 148 minutes later and heights at 34 percent of Boston’s, so it rises later and much less than the Sound side. Stage Harbor, on this page, fits the south shore of Chatham and the approach to Monomoy.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
