Plan around the tide at New Haven

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station New Haven Harbor, New Haven Reach (NOAA 8465705). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 6.4 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for New Haven come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8465705, New Haven Harbor, New Haven Reach. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 6.4 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 7.7 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 5.2 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 166 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.1 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 7.8 ft on September 30, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

Long Island Sound grows toward the west

New Haven Harbor averages 6.4 ft from low to high, more than twice the 2.7 ft of Mystic near the eastern end of the Sound. Long Island Sound is a long basin closed at its western end by the narrow East River, and the tide entering from the east grows as it travels west, reaching its largest range toward Stamford and Greenwich. New Haven sits partway along that slope.

Around the harbor, NOAA predicts its secondary stations from Bridgeport rather than from this gauge: Lighthouse Point at the harbor mouth runs four minutes ahead of Bridgeport at 91 percent of its high-water height, Branford five minutes ahead, Milford Harbor and Gulf Beach a few minutes ahead with similar heights. Up the Housatonic, Shelton lags Bridgeport by about three quarters of an hour.

Beaches and marsh

At Lighthouse Point Park and along the shore toward West Haven, the tide uncovers rocky ledges and a muddy, shelly beach at low water, the time to look for crabs and shells. The lowest low of the period is -1.1 ft, on January 23, 2027. Shoreline roads in the area flood on the highest tides when a storm pushes water west into the Sound; the highest prediction here is 7.8 ft on September 30, 2027.

Highest and lowest tides at New Haven, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for New Haven Harbor, New Haven Reach between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at New Haven?

The highest tide predicted at New Haven Harbor, New Haven Reach between October 2026 and December 2027 is 7.8 ft above MLLW, on September 30, 2027 at 11:48 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 6.7 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does New Haven get negative low tides?

Yes. On 166 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.1 ft on January 23, 2027 at 5:52 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at New Haven?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Why is the tide bigger in New Haven than in eastern Connecticut?

Because the tide wave entering Long Island Sound from the east grows as it moves west into a basin that is almost closed at the New York end. New Haven averages over six feet, while Mystic near the eastern entrance averages under three. The largest ranges in the Sound are near Stamford and Greenwich.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
