Plan around the tide at Seattle

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station SEATTLE (Madison St.), Elliott Bay (NOAA 9447130). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 11.3 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Seattle come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 9447130, SEATTLE (Madison St.), Elliott Bay. The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 1.8 ft on average, for an average daily range of 11.3 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 14.3 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 8.5 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 241 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -3.9 ft on December 24, 2026. The highest predicted tide of that period is 13.1 ft on January 25, 2027. Clock times are Pacific Time, daylight saving time included.

Eleven feet in a deep fjord

Puget Sound is a network of deep, glacier-carved channels, and its tide grows as it travels south from the Strait of Juan de Fuca. On Seattle's waterfront the average day moves 11.3 ft from the lower low to the higher high, and spring tides reach 14.3 ft. The tide is mixed: one low of the day is often much lower than the other, and on the strongest days the lower low falls well below zero, as low as -3.9 ft on December 24, 2026.

Across the central Sound the timing is remarkably uniform. NOAA predicts Harbor Island, Shilshole Bay, Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge, Port Blakely and Point Vashon all from this gauge within five minutes and a couple of percent of the height. The Duwamish Waterway at Eighth Avenue South runs ten minutes later.

Low-tide beach walks

The big minus tides of the Sound are the season of beach walks: rocky shores and sand flats at places like Lincoln Park, Alki and the beaches of Bainbridge show sea stars, anemones and moon snails that stay hidden most of the year. In the Pacific Northwest the deepest lows come in daylight from late spring to summer, and in darkness in winter. The negative low tides guide explains why, and the low tide planner finds the daylight windows.

Ferries, locks and the high tide

Ferry docks are built for the full range, and the Ballard Locks keep Lake Union and Lake Washington above the tide. The highest predicted tide this period is 13.1 ft, on January 25, 2027; winter king tides with a low-pressure storm can push water onto low parts of the waterfront.

Highest and lowest tides at Seattle, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for SEATTLE (Madison St.), Elliott Bay between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Seattle?

The highest tide predicted at SEATTLE (Madison St.), Elliott Bay between October 2026 and December 2027 is 13.1 ft above MLLW, on January 25, 2027 at 7:16 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 11.4 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Seattle get negative low tides?

Yes. On 241 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -3.9 ft on December 24, 2026 at 10:58 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

Why are the two high tides at Seattle different heights?

This coast has a mixed tide: the daily and twice-daily constituents are of comparable size, so one high of the day stands taller than the other, by 1.8 ft on average here, and the two lows differ by 6.3 ft. The gap is largest when the moon is far from the equator, and it is why charts list a higher high and a lower low.

When are the best low tides for beach walks in Seattle?

From late spring through summer, when the lowest lows of the day fall around midday and drop below zero on many days. In winter the deep lows come at night. Look for days with a low of minus two feet or lower in daylight, and arrive an hour before the low to follow the water out.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
