Station LEWES (BREAKWATER HARBOR) (NOAA 8557380). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 4.4 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Lewes come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8557380, LEWES (BREAKWATER HARBOR). The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 4.4 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 5.4 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 3.4 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 151 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.0 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 5.6 ft on August 2, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

At the mouth of Delaware Bay

Lewes sits inside Cape Henlopen, sheltered by two stone breakwaters, and its gauge measures the tide entering Delaware Bay: 4.4 ft on an average day. The bay is a long funnel, and the tide grows and slows as it travels up toward Philadelphia, taking several hours to get there. Lewes is the starting point of that journey, which is why NOAA uses it as a reference for points on both sides of the bay mouth, including Cape May Point in New Jersey.

Bay beaches versus ocean beaches

The bay beaches at Lewes are calm and gently sloped, and at low tide they open onto broad sandy shallows. Around the point, the ocean beaches of Cape Henlopen and Rehoboth Beach feel the open Atlantic, and their tide comes earlier: on the days compared for this site, Rehoboth's predicted highs and lows ran roughly 45 minutes to an hour ahead of Lewes. Both are worth checking if you split a day between the bay and the ocean.

The ferry and the shoals

The ferry to Cape May crosses the bay mouth over shoals where tidal currents run strongly. For small boats, the current in the canal and around the breakwaters matters as much as the height. The lowest low of the period is -1.0 ft, on January 23, 2027; the highest high 5.6 ft, on August 2, 2027.

Highest and lowest tides at Lewes, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for LEWES (BREAKWATER HARBOR) between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Lewes?

The highest tide predicted at LEWES (BREAKWATER HARBOR) between October 2026 and December 2027 is 5.6 ft above MLLW, on August 2, 2027 at 9:32 PM. An ordinary higher high reaches 4.7 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Lewes get negative low tides?

Yes. On 151 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.0 ft on January 23, 2027 at 2:23 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Lewes?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Is the tide later in Lewes than in Rehoboth Beach?

Yes. Rehoboth faces the open Atlantic, while Lewes is inside Cape Henlopen at the mouth of Delaware Bay. Comparing the two NOAA predictions over the first days of this period, the highs and lows at Lewes come roughly 45 minutes to an hour after Rehoboth’s. Use the station on the side of the cape where you will be.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
