A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.
Station HILO (NOAA 1617760). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 2.4 ft is the average daily range here.
Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026
Tide times for Hilo come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 1617760, HILO. The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 1.0 ft on average, for an average daily range of 2.4 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 3.3 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 1.6 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 226 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.7 ft on December 23, 2026. The highest predicted tide of that period is 3.3 ft on December 24, 2026. Clock times are Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time, which has no daylight saving time.
The Big Island's reference gauge
Hilo Bay averages 2.4 ft from lower low to higher high, the largest of the four Hawaii stations on this site, with spring tides near 3.3 ft. NOAA uses the Hilo gauge to predict the rest of the island, including Kailua-Kona on the west coast. The bay is sheltered by a long breakwater, and its tide is mixed, with unequal highs.
A bay shaped by tsunamis
Hilo's waterfront is known for the tsunamis of 1946 and 1960, after which the low-lying bayfront was turned into parks. Those waves had nothing to do with the daily tide; they came from earthquakes far away. The tide gauge in the bay recorded them, and it remains part of the warning network. The tide on this page is the ordinary, predictable rise and fall.
Tide pools on a volcanic shore
Along the lava coast near Hilo and south toward Puna, warm and cold pools in the rock fill and drain with the tide. At a low tide, down to -0.7 ft on December 23, 2026, the pools are calmer and more enclosed; at high tide with a swell, waves wash over them. Surf on the windward coast can be rough at any tide. For the leeward side, see Kailua-Kona.
Highest and lowest tides at Hilo, 2026 to 2027
The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for HILO between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.
