Station KAHULUI (NOAA 1615680). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 2.3 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Kahului come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 1615680, KAHULUI. The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 0.9 ft on average, for an average daily range of 2.3 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 3.1 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 1.5 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 233 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.8 ft on December 23, 2026. The highest predicted tide of that period is 3.1 ft on August 1, 2027. Clock times are Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time, which has no daylight saving time.

Maui's harbor tide

Kahului Harbor averages 2.3 ft between lower low and higher high, a little more than Honolulu. The tide is mixed and at times almost diurnal: on 20 percent of days there is only one clear high. For the harbor and the north shore beaches, the tide is a small effect next to the trade-wind swell and the wind itself, which kitesurfers and windsurfers along this coast follow far more closely than the moon. Still, on the reef-fringed beaches a low tide changes where it is easy to get in and out of the water./p>

The south side runs two hours later

Across the isthmus, Kihei on Maalaea Bay is predicted by NOAA from Kahului with high water 112 minutes later and low water 79 minutes later, with lows only about half as deep. The south shore beaches from Kihei to Wailea therefore see their tide hours after the harbor. Snorkelers heading to the reefs off south Maui should keep that lag in mind when reading a Kahului table.

Reef flats, fishponds and the lowest lows

Along the shore, shallow reef flats and the old Hawaiian fishponds are most exposed on the lowest tides, down to -0.8 ft on December 23, 2026. Walking on live reef damages it and the flats are slippery; viewing from the edge is the better choice. The highest prediction this period is 3.1 ft, on August 1, 2027. Compare with Honolulu.

Highest and lowest tides at Kahului, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for KAHULUI between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Kahului?

The highest tide predicted at KAHULUI between October 2026 and December 2027 is 3.1 ft above MLLW, on August 1, 2027 at 2:41 PM. An ordinary higher high reaches 2.3 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Kahului get negative low tides?

Yes. On 233 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.8 ft on December 23, 2026 at 7:39 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

Why are the two high tides at Kahului different heights?

This coast has a mixed tide: the daily and twice-daily constituents are of comparable size, so one high of the day stands taller than the other, by 0.9 ft on average here, and the two lows differ by 0.9 ft. The gap is largest when the moon is far from the equator, and it is why charts list a higher high and a lower low.

Is the tide in Kihei the same as in Kahului?

No. NOAA predicts Kihei, on Maalaea Bay, from the Kahului harbor gauge with high water almost two hours later and low water about 80 minutes later, and with shallower lows. If you are snorkeling or launching on the south shore of Maui, add that lag to the Kahului times shown here.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
