Plan around the tide at Old Orchard Beach

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station Old Orchard Beach (NOAA 8418557). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 9.5 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Old Orchard Beach come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8418557, Old Orchard Beach, a subordinate station whose highs and lows NOAA corrects from PORTLAND. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 9.5 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 11.6 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 7.6 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 188 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.8 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 11.2 ft on December 25, 2026. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

Seven miles of flat sand and a big tide

Old Orchard Beach is a long, nearly flat strand on Saco Bay, and that shape turns the vertical tide into a very wide horizontal one. With 9.5 ft between high and low on a typical day, the waterline travels a long way across the sand in six hours: towels spread close to the water at low tide are in the swash by mid-afternoon of a rising tide. The best time for a long walk on hard, wet sand is the two hours either side of the low.

This is a subordinate station. NOAA does not run a gauge here; it takes the Portland prediction, keeps the high-water time, moves the low six minutes earlier and multiplies the heights by 0.97. Between those highs and lows, the curve on this page follows the shape of Portland's hourly prediction.

Saco River and Scarborough marsh

The beach sits between two tidal rivers. To the south, Camp Ellis at the mouth of the Saco River and Biddeford upriver have their own NOAA stations, and so does Pine Point on the Scarborough River to the north. Inside those rivers the water turns later than on the open beach and the current at the mouth can be strong in the middle of the ebb, which matters more to paddlers and anglers than the exact height.

Cold water, wide flats

On the lowest tides of the year, -1.8 ft predicted for January 23, 2027, the beach is at its widest. Sand bars uncovered at low tide are cut by runnels that fill first when the tide turns: cross them early on a rising tide, not late. The Portland page gives the harbor tide this one is built from.

Highest and lowest tides at Old Orchard Beach, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Old Orchard Beach between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

NOAA predicts Old Orchard Beach from the reference station PORTLAND (8418150): high water 0 minutes later, low water 6 minutes earlier, heights multiplied by 0.97 at high water and 0.97 at low water. Between those highs and lows the curve on this page follows the shape of the reference station's hourly curve.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Old Orchard Beach?

The highest tide predicted at Old Orchard Beach between October 2026 and December 2027 is 11.2 ft above MLLW, on December 25, 2026 at 11:24 AM. An ordinary high tide reaches about 9.1 ft. Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Old Orchard Beach get negative low tides?

Yes. On 188 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.8 ft on January 23, 2027 at 5:32 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Old Orchard Beach?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Is the Old Orchard Beach tide the same as Portland?

Nearly. NOAA predicts Old Orchard Beach from the Portland gauge: high water at the same minute, low water six minutes earlier, heights at 97 percent. On an average day that is a few inches less range than Portland. Wind from the east can still push the real water higher than either prediction during a storm.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
