Station Annapolis (US Naval Academy) (NOAA 8575512). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 1.2 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Annapolis come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8575512, Annapolis (US Naval Academy). The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 0.4 ft on average, for an average daily range of 1.2 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 1.5 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 0.9 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 161 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.7 ft on January 22, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 1.9 ft on July 3, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

A one-foot tide in a sailing capital

Annapolis sees only 1.2 ft between low and high on an average day. Chesapeake Bay is long and shallow, and the tide that enters at the Virginia capes loses much of its height on the way up: near the mouth the range is two to three feet, here barely more than one. For sailors on the Severn, that small rise matters less than the wind, which can raise or lower the bay by a foot or more over a day or two.

The tide climbs the bay in hours

The tide wave takes most of a tidal cycle to travel up the Chesapeake, so places a few miles apart turn at different times. NOAA predicts Thomas Point Shoal Light, south of Annapolis, from Baltimore with high water nearly two hours earlier, and the South River at Edgewater about the same; the Magothy River at Mountain Point turns within minutes of Baltimore. Comparing the two reference stations directly, the highs and lows at Annapolis come one to two hours ahead of Baltimore, whose average range is 1.4 ft.

Mixed tide, lopsided days

The upper bay has a mixed tide: the two highs of a day can differ noticeably, and on some days one of them hardly shows. The lowest predicted low of this period is -0.7 ft, on January 22, 2027; a winter northwest wind on top of it can expose unusual stretches of the creek bottoms. For the Maryland coast, Ocean City has a true Atlantic tide.

Highest and lowest tides at Annapolis, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Annapolis (US Naval Academy) between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Annapolis?

The highest tide predicted at Annapolis (US Naval Academy) between October 2026 and December 2027 is 1.9 ft above MLLW, on July 3, 2027 at 5:16 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 1.4 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Annapolis get negative low tides?

Yes. On 161 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.7 ft on January 22, 2027 at 10:30 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

Why are the two high tides at Annapolis different heights?

This coast has a mixed tide: the daily and twice-daily constituents are of comparable size, so one high of the day stands taller than the other, by 0.4 ft on average here, and the two lows differ by 0.3 ft. The gap is largest when the moon is far from the equator, and it is why charts list a higher high and a lower low.

Why does wind matter more than tide in Annapolis?

Because the tide is small, about a foot on an average day, while sustained wind over the long, shallow Chesapeake can pile water up or push it out by a foot or more. A steady south wind raises the upper bay; a strong northwest wind after a front drains it. The prediction on this page is the astronomical tide only.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
