Station CAPE HATTERAS FISHING PIER (NOAA 8654400). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 3.4 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Hatteras come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8654400, CAPE HATTERAS FISHING PIER. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 3.4 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 4.4 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 2.5 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 198 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.9 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 4.5 ft on November 25, 2026. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

The ocean tide at the elbow of the Outer Banks

Hatteras Island bends sharply at Cape Point, where the coast turns from facing east to facing south. The station at the Frisco pier site, on the south-facing beach, averages 3.4 ft from low to high. NOAA predicts Cape Hatteras itself from this station with the same time, and keeps a second reference station, Hatteras (ocean), four miles west near the village.

Cape Point and Diamond Shoals

Off Cape Point the Diamond Shoals reach out into the Atlantic, where the cold water from the north meets the Gulf Stream. The tidal current and the longshore currents meet over the shoals, and the Point is one of the best-known surf fishing spots on the coast. The tide here is a modest one; what anglers read is the moving water around the turn and the shape of the sloughs on the point, which changes after every storm.

Hatteras Inlet and the sound

At the island's southern end, Hatteras Inlet is predicted from this station with high water 8 minutes later and two thirds of the height. Inside, in Pamlico Sound, the tide fades to almost nothing and the wind takes over. The lowest predicted low on the ocean beach this period is -0.9 ft, on January 23, 2027; the highest high, 4.5 ft, on November 25, 2026. Highway 12 overwash comes with storms rather than with the tide alone. See the Outer Banks comparison.

Highest and lowest tides at Hatteras, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for CAPE HATTERAS FISHING PIER between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Hatteras?

The highest tide predicted at CAPE HATTERAS FISHING PIER between October 2026 and December 2027 is 4.5 ft above MLLW, on November 25, 2026 at 7:15 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 3.5 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Hatteras get negative low tides?

Yes. On 198 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.9 ft on January 23, 2027 at 1:08 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Hatteras?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

What tide station should I use for Cape Point at Hatteras?

The Cape Hatteras fishing pier station on this page. NOAA predicts Cape Hatteras itself from it with high water one minute later and the same height, so the times hold for the Point. For Hatteras Inlet, NOAA adds 8 minutes and uses two thirds of the height; inside Pamlico Sound the tide is tiny and wind matters more.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
