Station OREGON INLET MARINA (NOAA 8652587). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 0.9 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Oregon Inlet come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8652587, OREGON INLET MARINA. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 0.9 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 1.2 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 0.7 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 89 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.2 ft on January 22, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 1.6 ft on October 1, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

A sound-side station, and why its tide is small

The marina at Oregon Inlet sits inside the inlet, on the Pamlico Sound side of Bodie Island, and its average daily range is only 0.9 ft. On the ocean beach a few miles away at Duck, the range averages 3.5 ft. The inlet is the main gap through which the ocean tide reaches the northern sounds, and most of its height is lost squeezing through. This page is for boaters at the marina and in the channels behind the inlet, not for the ocean beach.

Inside the inlet, the tide shape changes

NOAA predicts several points around the inlet from this marina, and their corrections show how distorted the tide becomes. At the Oregon Inlet bridge, high water comes 17 minutes earlier with almost double the high-water height, but low water comes 55 minutes earlier. In the Roanoke Sound channel, high water comes an hour and a half later with half the height. In the ocean side of the inlet the water behaves like the sea; a mile into the sound it barely moves.

Running the inlet

For boats heading offshore through the inlet, the current and the shoals matter far more than the height of the tide here. The channel shifts constantly, the ebb runs hard, and an ebb against an onshore swell can make the bar dangerous. Many captains prefer to cross on the flood in daylight. The lowest predicted low at the marina this period is -0.2 ft, on January 22, 2027. The Outer Banks comparison shows the marina beside the ocean stations.

Highest and lowest tides at Oregon Inlet, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for OREGON INLET MARINA between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Oregon Inlet?

The highest tide predicted at OREGON INLET MARINA between October 2026 and December 2027 is 1.6 ft above MLLW, on October 1, 2027 at 9:19 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 1.2 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Oregon Inlet get negative low tides?

Yes. On 89 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.2 ft on January 22, 2027 at 2:29 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Oregon Inlet?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Why is the Oregon Inlet tide so much smaller than at the beach?

The marina station sits on the sound side of the inlet. The ocean tide has to squeeze through the narrow inlet into the huge, shallow Pamlico and Roanoke sounds, and most of its height is lost, so the marina averages about a foot while the ocean beaches average three to four feet. Use an ocean station for the beach.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
