Station Narragansett Pier (NOAA 8454658). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 3.3 ft is the average daily range here.

Tide times for Narragansett come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8454658, Narragansett Pier, a subordinate station whose highs and lows NOAA corrects from NEWPORT. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 3.3 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 4.4 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 2.3 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 158 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.8 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 4.5 ft on September 30, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

A surf town on the West Passage

Narragansett's town beach faces south and east toward the mouth of Narragansett Bay, and its tide is a slightly trimmed version of Newport's. NOAA computes it with high water 11 minutes earlier, low water 11 minutes later and heights multiplied by about 0.9, giving an average daily range of 3.3 ft. That small range means the beach keeps much of its width at high tide; what changes more is how the waves break over the sandbar.

Surfers and the low-tide bar

On a sandy beach like this one, waves often break better on one part of the tide than another because the depth over the bar changes. Many local breaks along this coast are known as low-tide or mid-tide spots, and a big low can make a reef break shallow enough to be dangerous. The curve above shows when the water reaches the level you like; the lowest low of the period is -0.8 ft, on January 23, 2027.

Point Judith and the salt ponds

Four miles southwest, the Harbor of Refuge at Point Judith has its own reference station; behind it the salt ponds connect to the sea through narrow breachways where currents run fast at mid-tide. Across the West Passage, Beavertail on Jamestown is predicted from Newport with high water five minutes earlier and almost the full height. For the Newport side of the bay, see the Newport tide chart.

Highest and lowest tides at Narragansett, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Narragansett Pier between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

A subordinate station

NOAA predicts Narragansett Pier from the reference station NEWPORT (8452660): high water 11 minutes earlier, low water 11 minutes later, heights multiplied by 0.91 at high water and 0.93 at low water. Between those highs and lows the curve on this page follows the shape of the reference station's hourly curve.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Narragansett?

The highest tide predicted at Narragansett Pier between October 2026 and December 2027 is 4.5 ft above MLLW, on September 30, 2027 at 8:11 AM. An ordinary high tide reaches about 3.2 ft. Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Narragansett get negative low tides?

Yes. On 158 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.8 ft on January 23, 2027 at 1:25 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Narragansett?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Is Narragansett high tide earlier than Newport?

Slightly. NOAA predicts Narragansett Pier from the Newport gauge with high water 11 minutes earlier and low water 11 minutes later, and heights at about 90 percent of Newport’s. In practice the two towns see their highs within a quarter of an hour, so either chart works for a beach day; for the pier itself use this one.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
