Station NEWPORT (NOAA 8452660). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 3.7 ft is the average daily range here.
Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026
Tide times for Newport, RI come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8452660, NEWPORT. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 3.7 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 4.9 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 2.6 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 158 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.8 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 5.0 ft on September 30, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.
The gate of Narragansett Bay
Newport Harbor averages 3.7 ft from low to high, a moderate range for a sailing harbor where moorings and marina floats see a steady, predictable rise and fall. The gauge here is the reference NOAA uses for much of Narragansett Bay: Castle Hill and Beavertail at the entrance run about five minutes ahead with nearly the same height, while Prudence Island and Conanicut Point inside the bay come seven or eight minutes later with heights 7 to 14 percent larger. The tide grows a little as it pushes up the bay toward Providence.
Cliff Walk, Sachuest and the rocky shore
East of town, Sachuest Point is predicted from Newport with high water five minutes earlier and 90 percent of the height. On this rocky coast, the tide changes what is exposed rather than how wide the beach is: ledges, weed and pools along the shore appear at low tide and vanish at high. For Easton's Beach and Second Beach, the times on this page are a fair guide.
Sailing and the current
Sailors in the East Passage care about the current as much as the height. The flood runs into the bay and the ebb out of it, strongest in the middle of each, and wind against an ebb raises a short steep chop at the entrance. The lowest low of the period, -0.8 ft on January 23, 2027, and the highest high, 5.0 ft on September 30, 2027, set the extremes. Narragansett faces the bay's West Passage across Conanicut Island.
