Plan around the tide at Port Townsend
No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.
A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.
Station PORT TOWNSEND (NOAA 9444900). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 8.7 ft is the average daily range here.
Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026
Tide times for Port Townsend come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 9444900, PORT TOWNSEND. The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 1.5 ft on average, for an average daily range of 8.7 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 11.3 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 6.3 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 249 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -3.6 ft on July 4, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 10.0 ft on December 26, 2026. Clock times are Pacific Time, daylight saving time included.
The doorway of Puget Sound
Every tide that fills Puget Sound passes Port Townsend through Admiralty Inlet. The town's gauge averages 8.7 ft from lower low to higher high, less than the 11.3 ft of Seattle further south: the Sound amplifies the tide as it travels inland. The currents in the inlet are among the strongest in the region, and sailors on the wooden boats the town is known for plan their passages around them.
Discovery Bay, Marrowstone and Whidbey
NOAA predicts many nearby points from this gauge. Gardiner, at the head of Discovery Bay, has high water 47 minutes earlier with 94 percent of the height. Mystery Bay on Marrowstone Island has high water 15 minutes later and low water almost an hour later. Across the inlet, Point Partridge on Whidbey Island turns about ten minutes earlier, while Coupeville in Penn Cove is predicted from Seattle instead, 15 minutes later.
Mixed tides and the long low
Port Townsend's tide is strongly mixed: some days show one big ebb and a small one, and the lower low can drop far below zero, down to -3.6 ft on July 4, 2027. Those big summer lows uncover the beaches below Fort Worden and the spits around the bay. The highest prediction is 10.0 ft, on December 26, 2026.
Highest and lowest tides at Port Townsend, 2026 to 2027
The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for PORT TOWNSEND between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.
