Plan around the tide at Anchorage

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station ANCHORAGE, Knik Arm (NOAA 9455920). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 28.1 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Anchorage come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 9455920, ANCHORAGE, Knik Arm. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 28.1 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 33.6 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 22.2 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 195 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -4.5 ft on January 24, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 32.9 ft on September 1, 2027. Clock times are Alaska Time, daylight saving time included.

Twenty-eight feet, twice a day

Cook Inlet is a long, narrowing funnel, and the tide that enters it from the Gulf of Alaska grows all the way to its head. At Anchorage the average day moves 28.1 ft from low to high, and spring tides reach 33.6 ft. In the middle hours of a big rise the water climbs several feet in an hour. The highest predicted tide this period is 32.9 ft, on September 1, 2027.

The mudflats are not a beach

At low tide, Knik Arm and Turnagain Arm drain to vast flats of glacial silt. They look firm and they are not: the silt can liquefy under a footstep and hold a leg like cement, and the rising tide arrives faster than a person can walk. People have been trapped and drowned on these flats. Stay off them, whatever the tide table says. Watch the inlet from the Coastal Trail or the shore instead.

The bore of Turnagain Arm

On the biggest tides a tidal bore, a wave of incoming water, runs up Turnagain Arm south of the city, best seen from viewpoints along the Seward Highway some time after low tide at Anchorage. Surfers ride it. The bore is strongest around the new and full moon, when the range is largest; the lowest low of this period is -4.5 ft, on January 24, 2027. Port MacKenzie across Knik Arm has its own reference station. See Homer for the lower inlet and the tide range guide for why funnels amplify the tide.

Highest and lowest tides at Anchorage, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for ANCHORAGE, Knik Arm between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Anchorage?

The highest tide predicted at ANCHORAGE, Knik Arm between October 2026 and December 2027 is 32.9 ft above MLLW, on September 1, 2027 at 8:04 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 29.2 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Anchorage get negative low tides?

Yes. On 195 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -4.5 ft on January 24, 2027 at 2:52 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Anchorage?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

When can you see the bore tide near Anchorage?

On days with the largest ranges, around the new and full moon, the bore runs up Turnagain Arm a while after low tide at Anchorage, arriving later the further east you watch along the Seward Highway. Use this page to find the big-range days and the low time, then arrive early at a pullout and stay off the mudflats.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
