Plan around the tide at Homer

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station Homer, Coal Point, Kachemak Bay (NOAA 9455558). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 18.2 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Homer come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 9455558, Homer, Coal Point, Kachemak Bay. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 18.2 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 24.7 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 11.8 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 228 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -5.3 ft on July 5, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 22.7 ft on September 30, 2027. Clock times are Alaska Time, daylight saving time included.

A spit in a big-tide bay

The Homer Spit reaches four and a half miles into Kachemak Bay, and its harbor sits at the end. The tide here averages 18.2 ft from low to high and reaches 24.7 ft on spring tides, smaller than at Anchorage but still among the largest in the country. Ramps and floats at the harbor are built for that range; at a minus tide the bottom of a ramp can be far from the water.

Minus tides and tidepooling

The lowest tides of the year, down to -5.3 ft on July 5, 2027, uncover rocky reefs and pools along the shores of the bay that are under water most of the time. Beach walkers and clam diggers watch for those days, and have to keep an eye on the clock: with this much range, the water comes back quickly, and the flats can cut off a path to shore.

Across the bay

Halibut Cove, Sadie Cove and Tutka Bay on the south shore are predicted by NOAA from Seldovia, with times within a few minutes and small height adjustments. Water taxis to the south shore and kayakers crossing the bay plan around the current at the end of the spit, which runs hard on big tides. For the head of Cook Inlet, see Anchorage.

Highest and lowest tides at Homer, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Homer, Coal Point, Kachemak Bay between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Homer?

The highest tide predicted at Homer, Coal Point, Kachemak Bay between October 2026 and December 2027 is 22.7 ft above MLLW, on September 30, 2027 at 3:19 PM. An ordinary higher high reaches 18.4 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Homer get negative low tides?

Yes. On 228 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -5.3 ft on July 5, 2027 at 10:11 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Homer?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

How big are the tides in Homer, Alaska?

Very big: the average day moves around eighteen feet between low and high, and spring tides add several feet more. At a minus tide the harbor ramps reach far down, and wide beaches and reefs appear. The water returns fast, so beach walkers on Kachemak Bay start out before the low and head back early.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
