Station Balboa Pier, Newport Beach (NOAA 9410583). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 5.3 ft is the average daily range here.

Tide times for Newport Beach come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 9410583, Balboa Pier, Newport Beach, a subordinate station whose highs and lows NOAA corrects from LOS ANGELES (Outer Harbor). The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 1.6 ft on average, for an average daily range of 5.3 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 7.2 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 3.4 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 226 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.9 ft on January 21, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 7.0 ft on December 24, 2026. Clock times are Pacific Time, daylight saving time included.

From the Los Angeles breakwater to the Balboa surf

There is no full-time gauge on Balboa Pier. NOAA predicts its tide from Los Angeles Outer Harbor, about 25 miles up the coast, with high water 9 minutes earlier, low water at the same time and heights at 96 percent. Those small corrections say something about this coast: the long, straight beaches of Orange County see the tide nearly all at once. The result here is an average daily range of 5.3 ft, opening to 7.2 ft around the new and full moon. NOAA also keeps a station at the Newport Bay entrance off Corona del Mar, a mile east of the pier, for the water that runs between the jetties.

Peninsula, harbor and the back bay

The Balboa Peninsula is a strip of sand between the open Pacific and Newport Harbor. Walk a few blocks from the pier across the peninsula and you leave the surf for calm moorings, but the tide inside the harbor does not drift far from the ocean schedule because the entrance is short. The picture changes in places where water has to squeeze through a narrow mouth. At the Santa Ana River entrance, four miles northwest, NOAA predicts high water 23 minutes after Los Angeles Outer Harbor and low water 107 minutes after, with highs at 54 percent and lows at 20 percent. Upper Newport Bay, with its marsh and mudflats, behaves more like that than like the pier.

Low water along the jetty and the rocky points

East of the harbor mouth, the shore of Corona del Mar turns to rocky points and coves. Those benches are worth visiting near a low that dips below 0 ft, which happens on 226 days of the prediction period. See Long Beach for the port side of the same tide.

Highest and lowest tides at Newport Beach, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Balboa Pier, Newport Beach between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

A subordinate station

NOAA predicts Balboa Pier, Newport Beach from the reference station LOS ANGELES (Outer Harbor) (9410660): high water 9 minutes earlier, low water 0 minutes later, heights multiplied by 0.96 at high water and 0.96 at low water. Between those highs and lows the curve on this page follows the shape of the reference station's hourly curve.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Newport Beach?

The highest tide predicted at Balboa Pier, Newport Beach between October 2026 and December 2027 is 7.0 ft above MLLW, on December 24, 2026 at 8:18 AM. An ordinary high tide reaches about 4.6 ft. Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Newport Beach get negative low tides?

Yes. On 226 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.9 ft on January 21, 2027 at 2:53 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

Why are the two high tides at Newport Beach different heights?

This coast has a mixed tide: the daily and twice-daily constituents are of comparable size, so one high of the day stands taller than the other, by 1.6 ft on average here, and the two lows differ by 2.0 ft. The gap is largest when the moon is far from the equator, and it is why charts list a higher high and a lower low.

Does the tide in Newport Harbor follow Balboa Pier?

Near the harbor entrance, yes, within a few minutes, because the jetties open straight onto the ocean and NOAA keeps its own station at the entrance off Corona del Mar. Farther in, toward the shallow upper bay and its marsh, the water takes longer to fill and drain, so lows arrive later and stay higher than at the pier. Use the entrance station for the main channel and allow extra time upstream.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
