Plan around the tide at Monterey

Height above MLLW

  • Tue Oct 13, 5:28 PM to 6:34 PM1 h 6 min · lowest 0.3 ft at 6:33 PM

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station MONTEREY, MONTEREY BAY (NOAA 9413450). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 5.3 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Monterey come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 9413450, MONTEREY, MONTEREY BAY. The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 1.5 ft on average, for an average daily range of 5.3 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 7.2 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 3.7 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 231 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.8 ft on December 24, 2026. The highest predicted tide of that period is 7.0 ft on December 24, 2026. Clock times are Pacific Time, daylight saving time included.

The southern corner of a great bay

Monterey Bay opens wide to the west, a curve of shoreline more than 20 miles across from Santa Cruz to the Monterey Peninsula. The harbor gauge sits in its sheltered southern corner, behind the peninsula that blocks the northwest swell. An average day here spans 5.3 ft, close to the figure of the Southern California beaches and well short of the Oregon estuaries. Spring tides reach 7.2 ft. Across the peninsula, NOAA predicts Carmel Cove from this gauge with high water 3 minutes earlier and heights at 97 percent, so a single table covers both shores.

Granite benches of the peninsula

West of the harbor, past Cannery Row, the coast becomes a rocky shelf of granite all the way around to Point Pinos and the shore of Pacific Grove. This is one of the classic places in California for looking at the intertidal zone, and the tide decides how much of it shows. The upper band of rock is dry most of the day; the lower one, with its deeper pools, comes out only when the water falls below the chart zero, on 231 days of the prediction period. The whole bay is part of a national marine sanctuary, so treat what you lift as something to put back.

Kayaks and the kelp edge

Paddlers leaving the harbor beaches often prefer the morning, before the afternoon wind comes up. A higher tide gives more water over the rocks near shore; a lower one exposes them and shrinks the passages through the kelp. The Santa Cruz page gives the other end of the bay.

Highest and lowest tides at Monterey, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for MONTEREY, MONTEREY BAY between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Monterey?

The highest tide predicted at MONTEREY, MONTEREY BAY between October 2026 and December 2027 is 7.0 ft above MLLW, on December 24, 2026 at 9:27 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 5.3 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Monterey get negative low tides?

Yes. On 231 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.8 ft on December 24, 2026 at 5:06 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

Why are the two high tides at Monterey different heights?

This coast has a mixed tide: the daily and twice-daily constituents are of comparable size, so one high of the day stands taller than the other, by 1.5 ft on average here, and the two lows differ by 2.4 ft. The gap is largest when the moon is far from the equator, and it is why charts list a higher high and a lower low.

Is the Carmel tide the same as the Monterey tide?

Very close. NOAA predicts Carmel Cove, on Carmel Bay across the Monterey Peninsula, from the Monterey harbor gauge with high water about 3 minutes earlier, low water about 4 minutes earlier and heights at 97 to 99 percent. The difference is too small to change a beach plan. The surf, which is much stronger on the open Carmel shore than in the harbor, matters far more there.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
