A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station Montauk, Fort Pond Bay (NOAA 8510560). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 2.3 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Montauk come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8510560, Montauk, Fort Pond Bay. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 2.3 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 3.1 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 1.6 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 157 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.6 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 3.2 ft on July 3, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

A small tide at the end of Long Island

Montauk's Fort Pond Bay rises and falls just 2.3 ft on an average day. The tip of Long Island sits at the entrance to Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound, near where the Atlantic tide wave splits, and the range here is small compared with New York Harbor or the western Sound. What Montauk lacks in height it makes up in current: the water running between the Atlantic and the sounds sweeps around Montauk Point and through the rips off the lighthouse.

Lake Montauk and the harbor entrance

Lake Montauk, the harbor of the fishing fleet, has its own NOAA station two miles to the northeast. Its entrance is predicted by NOAA from New London with high water 24 minutes earlier and three quarters of New London's height. Inside the jetties the tide is gentle, but the inlet channel carries all the water in and out of the lake.

Surf, rips and the fishing at the Point

On the ocean beaches east of the village the swell matters more than the tide's small height. Surfcasters at the Point watch both: the rips and the bait moving around the point depend on the tidal current, strongest in the middle hours of each tide. The lowest predicted low of the period is -0.6 ft, on January 23, 2027; the solunar tables add the moon's periods for a planned trip.

Highest and lowest tides at Montauk, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Montauk, Fort Pond Bay between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Montauk?

The highest tide predicted at Montauk, Fort Pond Bay between October 2026 and December 2027 is 3.2 ft above MLLW, on July 3, 2027 at 9:09 PM. An ordinary higher high reaches 2.5 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Montauk get negative low tides?

Yes. On 157 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.6 ft on January 23, 2027 at 3:57 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Montauk?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Why is the tide range at Montauk so small?

Montauk sits at the entrance of Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound, near the area where the incoming Atlantic tide wave divides, so the water level swings little, about two to three feet a day. The currents around Montauk Point are strong, though, because large volumes of water move between the ocean and the sounds every six hours.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
