Station NEW YORK (The Battery) (NOAA 8518750). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 4.9 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for New York City come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8518750, NEW YORK (The Battery). The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 4.9 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 6.2 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 3.6 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 179 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.3 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 6.2 ft on August 2, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

Where the harbor's tide is measured

The Battery gauge has measured the harbor for about a century without interruption, and NOAA predicts dozens of points around the city from it. The tide here averages 4.9 ft from low to high. Around Manhattan it does not arrive everywhere at once: Gowanus Bay in Brooklyn turns about a quarter of an hour before the Battery, Wallabout Bay at the Navy Yard half an hour after, and East 41st Street on the East River more than an hour after, with a low tide that lags 46 minutes. Weehawken across the Hudson is 13 minutes behind.

The East River is a strait, not a river

The East River connects New York Harbor to Long Island Sound, and the two ends have tides of different timing and size. The difference in level drives strong currents through the channel, famously at Hell Gate, and they reverse with the tide. Kayakers and small boats on the East River plan by the current tables, not only by the heights; the heights on this page tell you when the harbor end is high or low.

Storm tides on the waterfront

Lower Manhattan's seawalls stand a few feet above the highest predicted tides: 6.2 ft on August 2, 2027 is the top of this period. The danger comes when a storm surge rides on a high tide, as in 2012, when the water at the Battery rose far above any prediction. Predictions carry no weather, so in a storm watch NOAA's observed water level and the forecasts of the National Weather Service. Beaches in the city, such as those of the Rockaways, face the ocean and see a tide close to the Jones Inlet one.

Highest and lowest tides at New York City, 2026 to 2027

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at New York City?

The highest tide predicted at NEW YORK (The Battery) between October 2026 and December 2027 is 6.2 ft above MLLW, on August 2, 2027 at 8:57 PM. An ordinary higher high reaches 5.1 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does New York City get negative low tides?

Yes. On 179 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.3 ft on January 23, 2027 at 3:09 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at New York City?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Is the tide the same on the East River and at the Battery in New York City?

No. NOAA predicts East 41st Street from the Battery with high water about an hour later and low water 46 minutes later, and Hunters Point on Newtown Creek more than an hour later still. The East River links two tides of different timing, which is why its current runs so hard and reverses with them.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
