Plan around the tide at Astoria

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station ASTORIA (Tongue Point), Oreg. (NOAA 9439040). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 8.5 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Astoria come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 9439040, ASTORIA (Tongue Point), Oreg.. The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 1.5 ft on average, for an average daily range of 8.5 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 10.7 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 6.3 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 226 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -2.1 ft on July 5, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 10.6 ft on December 24, 2026. Clock times are Pacific Time, daylight saving time included.

An ocean tide on a great river

The Columbia is wide and deep enough near its mouth that the Pacific tide runs far up it, and at Astoria it is still at full strength: 8.5 ft on an average day, 10.7 ft at spring tides, 6.3 ft at the neaps. Those figures put the river town among the largest tides on the Oregon coast. They also come with a caveat that ocean stations do not have. The river carries a huge volume of fresh water, highest during the snowmelt of late spring and early summer and after heavy winter rain, and that flow can hold the water level above the prediction, especially at low tide. Treat the lows on this page as a best case when the river is running high.

The estuary, shore by shore

NOAA predicts the other stations of the estuary from Tongue Point. Downstream toward the sea, the tide turns earlier: the Astoria port docks 8 minutes earlier at high water, Youngs Bay 13 minutes earlier, and Warrenton on the Skipanon River 13 minutes earlier at high water and 19 at low. Across the river on the Washington side, Hungry Harbor keeps nearly the same high-water time. Upstream the delay grows quickly, and the lows lag more than the highs: Settlers Point and Harrington Point both reach high water about 21 to 22 minutes after Tongue Point and low water more than 50 minutes after. The Astoria-Megler Bridge to Washington crosses all of this in a few miles.

Beyond the bar

The river meets the ocean between long jetties at the Columbia River Bar, one of the most dangerous crossings on any coast, where an ebb tide against a westerly swell builds steep breaking seas. This page is not a bar forecast. For the beaches south of the mouth, the Oregon coast stations give ocean times.

Highest and lowest tides at Astoria, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for ASTORIA (Tongue Point), Oreg. between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Astoria?

The highest tide predicted at ASTORIA (Tongue Point), Oreg. between October 2026 and December 2027 is 10.6 ft above MLLW, on December 24, 2026 at 12:40 PM. An ordinary higher high reaches 8.6 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Astoria get negative low tides?

Yes. On 226 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -2.1 ft on July 5, 2027 at 9:27 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

Why are the two high tides at Astoria different heights?

This coast has a mixed tide: the daily and twice-daily constituents are of comparable size, so one high of the day stands taller than the other, by 1.5 ft on average here, and the two lows differ by 2.6 ft. The gap is largest when the moon is far from the equator, and it is why charts list a higher high and a lower low.

Does the Columbia River current change the tide at Astoria?

Yes. The tide prediction for Astoria assumes average conditions, but the Columbia's flow varies a great deal through the year. When the river is high, during spring snowmelt or after heavy rain, the extra water keeps levels up, and low tides at Astoria often fail to fall as far as the table says. In a dry late summer the prediction is usually closer to what you see.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
