Plan around the tide at Tillamook Bay

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station Garibaldi (NOAA 9437540). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 8.1 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Tillamook Bay come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 9437540, Garibaldi. The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 1.5 ft on average, for an average daily range of 8.1 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 10.6 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 5.7 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 210 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -2.5 ft on July 5, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 10.4 ft on December 24, 2026. Clock times are Pacific Time, daylight saving time included.

A bay that empties to the mud

Tillamook Bay is wide but shallow, fed by five rivers, and on a low tide a large share of it turns into mudflats and sandbars cut by channels. The tide that does this is big: 8.1 ft on an average day at Garibaldi, 10.6 ft at spring tides, compared with 6.9 ft at Crescent City, California, the reference for most of the stations around the bay. With so much water moving over so little depth, a skiff that floated at noon can be sitting on the flat by mid-afternoon. Watch the clock more than the depth sounder.

Each shore runs on its own delay

The entrance is a jettied gap at Barview, just northwest of town, and the farther a place lies from it, the later the water arrives. NOAA predicts all of these from Crescent City:

  • Barview, at the entrance: high water 42 minutes later, low water 56 minutes later.
  • Miami Cove, a mile east of Garibaldi: 75 and 86 minutes.
  • Bay City, on the east shore: 93 and 120 minutes, lows at 83 percent.
  • Hoquarten Slough at Tillamook: 112 minutes at high water, 195 at low water, lows at 58 percent.

At the head of the bay, the low comes more than two hours after the low at the entrance and never drains as far, because river water and the slow flats hold it up. Plan a launch at the south end with the Tillamook times, not this page.

The ocean side of Garibaldi

Outside the jetties, the beaches north toward Rockaway face the open sea and follow the entrance clock. The bar at the mouth can break hard on an outgoing tide with swell, and the ramp planner helps pick a launch on the flood.

Highest and lowest tides at Tillamook Bay, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Garibaldi between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Tillamook Bay?

The highest tide predicted at Garibaldi between October 2026 and December 2027 is 10.4 ft above MLLW, on December 24, 2026 at 12:11 PM. An ordinary higher high reaches 8.3 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Tillamook Bay get negative low tides?

Yes. On 210 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -2.5 ft on July 5, 2027 at 8:25 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

Why are the two high tides at Tillamook Bay different heights?

This coast has a mixed tide: the daily and twice-daily constituents are of comparable size, so one high of the day stands taller than the other, by 1.5 ft on average here, and the two lows differ by 2.9 ft. The gap is largest when the moon is far from the equator, and it is why charts list a higher high and a lower low.

Why does low tide come so late at the south end of Tillamook Bay?

The bay is shallow and the water has to drain across miles of flats and up the sloughs to reach Tillamook, while the rivers keep pushing fresh water down. NOAA predicts Hoquarten Slough from Crescent City with low water more than three hours later, against under an hour at Barview near the entrance, and with much shallower lows. The south end is never as empty as the mouth.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
