Station Chincoteague Channel (south end) (NOAA 8630308). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 2.5 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Chincoteague come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8630308, Chincoteague Channel (south end). The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 2.5 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 3.1 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 1.9 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 169 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.4 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 3.1 ft on November 25, 2026. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

An island between two tides

Chincoteague lies behind Assateague Island, and its waters are a web of channels, bays and marsh. The station at the south end of Chincoteague Channel averages 2.5 ft from low to high. On the ocean beach of Assateague, at Toms Cove, NOAA predicts a larger and earlier tide: from the Ocean City fishing pier, with high water 35 minutes later and heights 8 to 25 percent larger. The beach visitors drive out to is on a different tide from the town's docks.

The back of the island runs hours late

On the north and west sides of the island the tide arrives late and small. NOAA predicts Lewis Creek from the Ocean City pier with high water 77 minutes later, Oyster Bay 104 minutes later and Blake Cove almost two hours later, with high-water heights between a quarter and a half of the pier's. A kayak trip in the marsh can find the water still rising long after the beach has turned.

Clamming and crabbing on the flats

The shallow bays around Chincoteague are clam and crab country, and the low tide sets the day: the lowest predicted low of this period is -0.4 ft, on January 23, 2027. Marsh channels can drain to mud at low water, so plan the return of a paddle on a rising tide. The negative low tides guide explains which days uncover the most.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Chincoteague?

The highest tide predicted at Chincoteague Channel (south end) between October 2026 and December 2027 is 3.1 ft above MLLW, on November 25, 2026 at 8:08 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 2.5 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Chincoteague get negative low tides?

Yes. On 169 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.4 ft on January 23, 2027 at 2:10 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Chincoteague?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Is the tide on Assateague beach the same as in Chincoteague?

No. The ocean beach at Toms Cove on Assateague is predicted by NOAA from the Ocean City fishing pier with high water 35 minutes later and a larger range, while the channels and coves of Chincoteague run later and smaller; Oyster Bay, for example, is predicted 104 minutes after the pier with less than half its height.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
