A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.
Station HAMPTON ROADS (Sewells Point) (NOAA 8638610). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 2.6 ft is the average daily range here.
Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026
Tide times for Norfolk come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8638610, HAMPTON ROADS (Sewells Point). The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 2.6 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 3.2 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 1.9 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 149 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.8 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 3.6 ft on October 1, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.
The reference for Hampton Roads
Sewells Point sits on the shore of the naval station, where the James, Elizabeth and Nansemond rivers meet the Chesapeake. The average day there runs 2.6 ft from low to high. NOAA predicts the rest of the harbor from it: Old Point Comfort across the water within minutes, Craney Island 18 minutes later, downtown Norfolk on the Elizabeth River 23 minutes later, Newport News 29 minutes later, Pig Point on the Nansemond 42 minutes later, all with high-water heights a little larger than Sewells Point.
A city that floods on sunny days
Norfolk is one of the places on the East Coast where high-tide flooding has become common: low neighborhoods near the Lafayette and Elizabeth rivers take water on the highest tides, even without a storm, as the land subsides and the sea rises. The highest prediction this period is 3.6 ft, on October 1, 2027; a northeast wind can add a foot. The king tides guide and NOAA’s page on high tide flooding explain the trend.
Boating in the roads
For small boats, the tidal currents in the main channels and around the bridge-tunnels run strongly with the flood and ebb, and big-ship traffic shares the water. The tide's height matters most in the creeks and at the ramps of the rivers. The lowest low of the period is -0.8 ft, on January 23, 2027.
Highest and lowest tides at Norfolk, 2026 to 2027
The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for HAMPTON ROADS (Sewells Point) between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.
