Plan around the tide at Half Moon Bay

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station Pillar Point Harbor, Half Moon Bay (NOAA 9414131). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 5.6 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Half Moon Bay come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 9414131, Pillar Point Harbor, Half Moon Bay. The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 1.4 ft on average, for an average daily range of 5.6 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 7.4 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 3.9 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 232 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.9 ft on December 24, 2026. The highest predicted tide of that period is 7.2 ft on December 24, 2026. Clock times are Pacific Time, daylight saving time included.

Pillar Point and the open coast

Half Moon Bay is the crescent of beach that curves south from Pillar Point, the headland that shields the harbor at Princeton from the northwest swell. Outside that headland the reef runs out toward deep water, and the big-wave break of Mavericks lies offshore. Inside the breakwater the gauge records a tide of 5.6 ft on an average day, 7.4 ft at spring tides. That is the tide of the open Pacific, a little smaller than the 5.8 ft measured at the Golden Gate, and it holds with little change along the coast from Pacifica to the beaches south of town.

Over the hill, a different bay

The NOAA stations closest to this one on a map are not on this coast at all. They lie on the San Francisco Bay shore of the peninsula, ten to twelve miles away over the ridge, and their water reaches them the long way, through the Golden Gate. NOAA predicts Coyote Point Marina from the Golden Gate gauge with high water 42 minutes later, low water 68 minutes later and highs at 129 percent; Point San Bruno is 38 minutes later at high water. Someone who launches on the bay in the morning and walks the Half Moon Bay beach in the afternoon is dealing with two separate schedules, and the bay side can be close to an hour behind.

The reef flats north of the harbor

Just north of Pillar Point, at Moss Beach, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve protects a broad, flat reef that comes out of the water on the lower tides. On 232 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below the chart zero. The list of negative low tides sorts them by depth and by daylight.

Highest and lowest tides at Half Moon Bay, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Pillar Point Harbor, Half Moon Bay between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Half Moon Bay?

The highest tide predicted at Pillar Point Harbor, Half Moon Bay between October 2026 and December 2027 is 7.2 ft above MLLW, on December 24, 2026 at 9:39 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 5.6 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Half Moon Bay get negative low tides?

Yes. On 232 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.9 ft on December 24, 2026 at 5:10 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

Why are the two high tides at Half Moon Bay different heights?

This coast has a mixed tide: the daily and twice-daily constituents are of comparable size, so one high of the day stands taller than the other, by 1.4 ft on average here, and the two lows differ by 2.4 ft. The gap is largest when the moon is far from the equator, and it is why charts list a higher high and a lower low.

Is the tide at Half Moon Bay the same as on San Francisco Bay?

No. Half Moon Bay is on the open ocean, while the bay shore of the peninsula, only a few miles east over the hills, fills through the Golden Gate. NOAA predicts Coyote Point from the Golden Gate gauge about 40 minutes later at high water and about an hour later at low water, with taller highs. Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
