San Francisco tides today

The San Francisco gauge stands at the Golden Gate on the Presidio shore near Fort Point, the narrow strait through which every tide of the bay enters and leaves.

Plan around the tide at San Francisco

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station SAN FRANCISCO (Golden Gate) (NOAA 9414290). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 5.8 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for San Francisco come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 9414290, SAN FRANCISCO (Golden Gate). The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 1.2 ft on average, for an average daily range of 5.8 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 7.5 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 4.2 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 237 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.8 ft on December 24, 2026. The highest predicted tide of that period is 7.2 ft on December 24, 2026. Clock times are Pacific Time, daylight saving time included.

The oldest record on the coast

This is the longest-running tide station in the Western Hemisphere, with measurements going back to 1854, and it sits where it matters most: in the throat of the Golden Gate, just inside the bridge. Everything that fills and drains San Francisco Bay, from the South Bay marshes to the Delta, passes this point twice a day. The average range here is 5.8 ft; spring tides reach 7.5 ft, neap tides 4.2 ft. Because so much water squeezes through a strait about a mile wide, the currents in the Gate run strong, and the turn of the current does not fall at the time of high or low water printed here. Boaters need NOAA's current predictions, not this table.

Ocean Beach turns first, the bay later

The tide reaches the outer coast before the strait. NOAA predicts Ocean Beach from this gauge with high water 49 minutes earlier and low water 35 minutes earlier, and Point Bonita, at the Marin side of the entrance, 17 minutes earlier at high water. Inside, the delay builds: Sausalito 10 minutes later at 97 percent of the highs, Pier 41 on the northern waterfront 13 minutes later, Alcatraz 14 minutes later at high water and 18 at low, the west side of Angel Island 13 minutes later. A walk on Ocean Beach and a sail from the city front run on clocks almost an hour apart.

Crissy Field and the waterfront at the top of the tide

The highest predicted water of the period, on December 24, 2026, comes in the middle of winter, when storms can stack wind and pressure on top of it. The low shoreline along Crissy Field and the Embarcadero is where those days are most visible. The king tide calendar lists the dates.

Highest and lowest tides at San Francisco, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for SAN FRANCISCO (Golden Gate) between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at San Francisco?

The highest tide predicted at SAN FRANCISCO (Golden Gate) between October 2026 and December 2027 is 7.2 ft above MLLW, on December 24, 2026 at 10:37 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 5.8 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does San Francisco get negative low tides?

Yes. On 237 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.8 ft on December 24, 2026 at 5:42 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

Why are the two high tides at San Francisco different heights?

This coast has a mixed tide: the daily and twice-daily constituents are of comparable size, so one high of the day stands taller than the other, by 1.2 ft on average here, and the two lows differ by 2.6 ft. The gap is largest when the moon is far from the equator, and it is why charts list a higher high and a lower low.

Why does high tide reach Ocean Beach before the Golden Gate in San Francisco?

Ocean Beach faces the open Pacific, while the Golden Gate gauge sits inside the strait that leads to the bay, so the tide wave meets the outer coast first. NOAA's correction puts Ocean Beach high water about 50 minutes ahead of the gauge and low water about 35 minutes ahead. Inside the bay the delay keeps growing, by ten to twenty minutes at Sausalito and Alcatraz.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
