Station Siesta Key, Big Sarasota Pass (NOAA 8726034). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 2.1 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Siesta Key come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8726034, Siesta Key, Big Sarasota Pass. The tide here is mixed: two highs and two lows most days, but of unequal size, the two highs of a day differing by 0.7 ft on average, for an average daily range of 2.1 ft between the higher high and the lower low. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 2.8 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 1.3 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 229 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.0 ft on January 21, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 2.8 ft on October 29, 2026. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

Reading a pass instead of a beach

2.1 ft is the typical day's spread at Big Sarasota Pass, measured where bay water and Gulf water trade places twice a day. The pass is the hinge of the local system: everything that fills the southern half of Sarasota Bay comes in here or through the smaller openings, so the gauge sees both the Gulf pulse and the bay's answer to it. The quartz-white sand of Siesta Beach lies a short way south along the Gulf shore, the nearest open beach to this gauge. The pair of highs is often lopsided, and on 28% of days one of them fades out entirely, leaving a single high.

Sarasota Bay runs ahead of St. Petersburg

NOAA's secondary stations around the bay are not tied to this pass; they hang off St. Petersburg, far up Tampa Bay. That produces corrections that look odd at first. Sarasota Bay at the city waterfront is predicted 98 minutes before St. Petersburg at high water, Hayden Roberts Bay, just east of the pass, 103 minutes before, and the Longboat Key station 90 minutes before, all with heights near nine tenths of the reference. Those negative minutes mean nothing more than that St. Petersburg is a long way inside a large bay and turns late; the Gulf coast here turns first.

For anyone launching from the bay side of the key, the practical rule is simple: the times on this page and those of the nearby bay stations sit close together, and both run well ahead of St. Petersburg.

Currents in the pass

A pass concentrates flow. In the middle hours of a rising or falling tide the water through Big Sarasota Pass moves fast, and it is slowest near the turn. Wind against the current makes it choppy. The predictions here are heights, not currents, and they are not for navigation; a south wind or a passing front can shift both the level and the timing.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Siesta Key?

The highest tide predicted at Siesta Key, Big Sarasota Pass between October 2026 and December 2027 is 2.8 ft above MLLW, on October 29, 2026 at 12:44 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 2.0 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Siesta Key get negative low tides?

Yes. On 229 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.0 ft on January 21, 2027 at 5:18 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

Why are the two high tides at Siesta Key different heights?

This coast has a mixed tide: the daily and twice-daily constituents are of comparable size, so one high of the day stands taller than the other, by 0.7 ft on average here, and the two lows differ by 0.9 ft. The gap is largest when the moon is far from the equator, and it is why charts list a higher high and a lower low.

Why are Sarasota Bay tides near Siesta Key listed as earlier than St. Petersburg?

Because NOAA computes the Sarasota Bay stations from St. Petersburg, which lies deep inside Tampa Bay and reaches high water late. The bay waterfront, Hayden Roberts Bay and Longboat Key all come out roughly an hour and a half ahead of it. The Gulf tide reaches Siesta Key first, so those early times are normal, not an error.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
