Station Barnegat Inlet, USCG Station (NOAA 8533615). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 2.6 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Long Beach Island come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8533615, Barnegat Inlet, USCG Station. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 2.6 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 3.2 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 2.0 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 251 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.8 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 3.2 ft on October 1, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

The inlet station, and why the bay barely moves

Barnegat Inlet averages 2.6 ft from low to high, already less than the ocean beaches further south. Inside, Barnegat Bay is a long, shallow lagoon connected to the sea mostly through this one narrow inlet, and the tide almost vanishes: NOAA predicts Loveladies Harbor, three miles down the island, from Sandy Hook with high water three hours later and heights at a tenth of Sandy Hook's. Waretown and Forked River on the mainland side get about 7 percent of the range, a few inches.

So on the bay side of Long Beach Island, wind decides the water level more than the moon does. A few days of northeast wind can push water into the bay and flood low streets with no help from the tide; a strong west wind can drain the edges.

Ocean beach and the inlet current

On the ocean side, the tide is a normal Atlantic tide, and the inlet jetty at Barnegat Light is a classic place to fish the moving water. Because so much bay drains through so narrow a gap, the current in the inlet is strong in the middle hours of each tide. The lowest low at the inlet this period is -0.8 ft, on January 23, 2027.

Planning on the bay

For a launch or a paddle on Barnegat Bay, use the bay stations' small ranges and late times, and watch the wind forecast. The tide range guide explains why inlets and lagoons shrink the tide so much.

Highest and lowest tides at Long Beach Island, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Barnegat Inlet, USCG Station between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Long Beach Island?

The highest tide predicted at Barnegat Inlet, USCG Station between October 2026 and December 2027 is 3.2 ft above MLLW, on October 1, 2027 at 9:03 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 2.5 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Long Beach Island get negative low tides?

Yes. On 251 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.8 ft on January 23, 2027 at 2:40 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Long Beach Island?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Why is there almost no tide in Barnegat Bay behind Long Beach Island?

The bay is long and shallow and exchanges water with the ocean mainly through narrow Barnegat Inlet, which chokes the tide. NOAA predicts Loveladies Harbor at about a tenth of Sandy Hook’s range, three hours later, and Waretown at 7 percent. Wind often moves the bay level more than the tide does.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
