Plan around the tide at Boston

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station BOSTON (NOAA 8443970). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 9.9 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Boston come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8443970, BOSTON. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 9.9 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 12.1 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 7.9 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 162 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.8 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 11.8 ft on November 26, 2026. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

Nearly ten feet, twice a day, in a city harbor

Boston Harbor rises and falls 9.9 ft on an average day, enough to change the city's edge: seawalls show their weed line, the Harborwalk steps disappear and reappear, and the mud of Dorchester Bay and the Neponset flats spreads wide at low water. Around the new and full moon the range grows to 12.1 ft.

NOAA uses this gauge to predict a whole family of nearby places. Charlestown at the mouth of the Charles, Deer Island, Moon Head and the Neponset River are listed as Boston with corrections of a minute or two and the same height. Further away, even stations on Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound are computed from Boston with larger corrections: Pleasant Bay in Chatham runs about two and a half hours later with a third of the range.

King tides on the waterfront

Boston is a city where the highest tides of the year can bring seawater onto streets and wharves, especially in the low parts of the waterfront when an onshore wind adds a surge. The highest prediction of the period is 11.8 ft on November 26, 2026. The king tides guide explains why those dates come with the moon's perigee, and NOAA's observations show how far the water actually went.

Harbor islands and the flats

For a ferry trip to the harbor islands, the tide changes the landing more than the crossing. For clamming flats, beach walks at Carson Beach or a paddle along the Neponset, the low matters: the lowest of the period is -1.8 ft on January 23, 2027. Currents in the channels between the islands run hard at mid-tide.

Highest and lowest tides at Boston, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for BOSTON between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Boston?

The highest tide predicted at BOSTON between October 2026 and December 2027 is 11.8 ft above MLLW, on November 26, 2026 at 11:49 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 10.3 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Boston get negative low tides?

Yes. On 162 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.8 ft on January 23, 2027 at 5:49 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Boston?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Do Boston tide times work for Cape Cod?

Not directly. NOAA predicts many Cape Cod stations from the Boston gauge, but with corrections that change everything: Barnstable Harbor runs about ten minutes later with the same height, while Pleasant Bay in Chatham runs around two and a half hours later with a third of Boston’s range. Use the Cape Cod station nearest to you instead.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
