Station Hyannis Port (NOAA 8447605). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 3.6 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Hyannis come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8447605, Hyannis Port. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 3.6 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 4.5 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 2.7 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 157 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.7 ft on December 25, 2026. The highest predicted tide of that period is 4.7 ft on July 5, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

A small tide on the Sound

Hyannis averages only 3.6 ft between low and high, against 10.0 ft in Plymouth on Cape Cod Bay. The reason lies offshore: Nantucket Sound is close to a point where the Atlantic's twice-daily tide wave nearly cancels itself, so the water level hardly swings while the currents in the sound stay strong. For swimmers at Kalmus or Craigville Beach, the beach width changes far less over a day than on the bay side.

Barnstable Harbor, six miles and a world away

Barnstable Harbor, straight north across the Cape, is predicted by NOAA from Boston with high water 11 minutes later and the full Boston range, close to ten feet. Its marshes and Sandy Neck flats drain spectacularly, while Hyannis barely moves. To the east and west along the south shore, the rivers lag: the Bass River in South Yarmouth runs nearly two hours behind Boston at 29 percent of its height, and Cotuit and Poponesset are similar.

Ferries and moorings

Ferry schedules to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard do not wait for the tide, and the harbor is dredged for them. For small boats in the inner harbor and in Lewis Bay, though, a negative low such as -0.7 ft on December 25, 2026 exposes the shallows. The Nantucket page shows the tide at the other end of the crossing.

Highest and lowest tides at Hyannis, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Hyannis Port between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Hyannis?

The highest tide predicted at Hyannis Port between October 2026 and December 2027 is 4.7 ft above MLLW, on July 5, 2027 at 1:06 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 3.8 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Hyannis get negative low tides?

Yes. On 157 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.7 ft on December 25, 2026 at 6:49 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Hyannis?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Why is the tide so small in Hyannis compared with the Cape Cod Bay side?

Hyannis faces Nantucket Sound, where the main Atlantic tide wave nearly cancels out, so its average range is a third of the bay side’s. Barnstable Harbor, six miles north on Cape Cod Bay, is predicted by NOAA with Boston’s full range of about ten feet. Same town, two very different tides.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
