Plan around the tide at Provincetown

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station Provincetown (NOAA 8446121). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 9.9 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Provincetown come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8446121, Provincetown. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 9.9 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 12.0 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 8.1 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 187 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.7 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 11.6 ft on July 6, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

The curl at the end of the Cape

Provincetown Harbor is the sheltered water inside the hook of Cape Cod, and it shares the large tide of Cape Cod Bay: 9.9 ft on an average day, 12.0 ft at spring tides. Compare that with 3.6 ft at Hyannis on the south shore, and the Cape looks like two coasts with two tides.

At low water the harbor's west end shows wide flats, and the long stone breakwater that crosses toward Long Point stands well clear of the water. At high water the same flats are a bay of shallow sea. Those who walk the breakwater go out on a falling tide and return with time to spare: the granite blocks are uneven and the surrounding flats flood quickly once the tide comes back.

Wellfleet across the bay

Eleven miles to the southeast, Wellfleet Harbor is predicted by NOAA from Boston with high water 14 minutes later and heights multiplied by 1.05, so its tide is close to Provincetown's in size. Its oyster grants and flats are exposed by the same big lows. The lowest predicted low here is -1.7 ft, on January 23, 2027.

Ocean beaches on the back side

The outer beaches of the Cape, Race Point and the National Seashore, face the open Atlantic rather than the bay. Their tide is smaller and comes at a different time from the harbor's, so the times on this page are for the harbor and the bay shore. For the whole Cape at a glance, see the Cape Cod comparison.

Highest and lowest tides at Provincetown, 2026 to 2027

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Provincetown?

The highest tide predicted at Provincetown between October 2026 and December 2027 is 11.6 ft above MLLW, on July 6, 2027 at 1:15 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 10.1 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Provincetown get negative low tides?

Yes. On 187 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.7 ft on January 23, 2027 at 5:53 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Provincetown?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Can I walk the Provincetown breakwater at high tide?

The stone breakwater toward Long Point stays above water at ordinary high tides, but the flats around it flood and some blocks get wet and slippery near the top of a big tide. Most people start on a falling tide and finish well before the next high. Check the high time and height for your day on this page before setting out.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
