Plan around the tide at Gloucester

Height above MLLW

No window of 30 minutes or more below 1.0 ft over the next 7 days in daylight. Try a higher level.

A falling tide uncovers sand bars and tide pools first; plan to be back before the water rises past the level you chose. Not for navigation.

Station Gloucester Harbor (NOAA 8441841). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 9.4 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Gloucester come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8441841, Gloucester Harbor. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 9.4 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 11.5 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 7.4 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 192 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -1.8 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 11.3 ft on July 6, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

Cape Ann's working harbor

Gloucester's inner harbor rises and falls 9.4 ft on an ordinary day. For a port where boats tie up to fixed wharves, that means long ladders at low water and decks level with the pier at high water, and lines adjusted with the tide. The predictions here come from harmonic constants measured at the harbor gauge, so they describe Gloucester itself, not a neighboring port with a correction.

The Annisquam and Good Harbor

Cape Ann is almost an island: the Annisquam River and the Blynman Canal cut it off from the mainland, and NOAA keeps separate stations at Annisquam (Lobster Cove) and at Rockport on the other side of the cape. Water moves through the canal with each tide, and the river's sandbars at Wingaersheek and the mouth of the Annisquam appear and vanish with it. At low tide, the beaches on the Ipswich Bay side open onto wide flats; at high tide they shrink to a strip of sand.

East of the harbor, Good Harbor Beach has a small island reachable on foot across the sand at low water. As with any tidal crossing, the way back floods first: watch the time of the low on the curve above and be back before it turns.

When the water is lowest and highest

The lowest predicted low of the period is -1.8 ft, on January 23, 2027; the highest high, 11.3 ft, comes on July 6, 2027. Compare with Boston, across Massachusetts Bay, which has a very similar tide.

Highest and lowest tides at Gloucester, 2026 to 2027

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for Gloucester Harbor between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Gloucester?

The highest tide predicted at Gloucester Harbor between October 2026 and December 2027 is 11.3 ft above MLLW, on July 6, 2027 at 1:05 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 9.6 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Gloucester get negative low tides?

Yes. On 192 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -1.8 ft on January 23, 2027 at 5:48 PM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Gloucester?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

When can you walk to Salt Island from Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester?

Only around low tide, when the sand between the beach and the island is uncovered. The tide in Gloucester averages more than nine feet, so the crossing floods quickly once the water turns. Check the low time for your day on this page, go out early and come back before the turn. Low tides near the new and full moon give the longest window.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
