Station GOVERNMENT CUT, MIAMI HARBOR ENTRANCE (NOAA 8723178). Predicted astronomical tide: wind, river flow and storms can move the real water by a foot or more. 2.5 ft is the average daily range here.

Published by Radif Partners · How the tides are computed · predictions downloaded October 13, 2026

Tide times for Miami come from the National Ocean Service prediction for station 8723178, GOVERNMENT CUT, MIAMI HARBOR ENTRANCE. The tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows of similar height every day, about six hours and a quarter apart, with an average daily range of 2.5 ft. Around the new and full moon the range grows to about 3.2 ft on one day in ten, and at the quarter moons it shrinks to 1.8 ft. Heights are in feet above Mean Lower Low Water, the zero of nautical charts, so a negative number is water below that zero: 213 of the 457 days from October 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 have one, down to -0.8 ft on January 23, 2027. The highest predicted tide of that period is 3.4 ft on September 30, 2027. Clock times are Eastern Time, daylight saving time included.

The cut that sets South Florida's clock

Government Cut was dug more than a century ago to give Miami's port a straight channel to the sea, and its gauge has become the base for tide predictions from Palm Beach to the upper Keys. The tide here is small and regular: 2.5 ft on an average day, two highs of nearly equal height. South Beach's ocean shore, just north, follows almost the same times.

Biscayne Bay turns later

West of the cut, Biscayne Bay fills slowly through the cut and the channels between the keys. NOAA predicts Fishermans Channel at Dodge Island 34 minutes later, San Marino Island in the Venetian Causeway islands 37 minutes later, the Key Biscayne Yacht Club 44 minutes later and Dinner Key Marina in Coconut Grove 54 minutes later at high water; low water lags even more, up to 108 minutes at Dinner Key. Paddlers and boaters in the bay should use those times.

Miami Beach and the king tides

Miami Beach is one of the most watched places in the country for high-tide flooding: in autumn, when the highest tides meet the seasonal rise of sea level, water comes up through the storm drains of low streets on the bay side. The city has raised roads and installed pumps. The highest prediction this period is 3.4 ft, on September 30, 2027; the lowest low -0.8 ft, on January 23, 2027. See Fort Lauderdale to the north.

The six highest highs and six lowest lows predicted for GOVERNMENT CUT, MIAMI HARBOR ENTRANCE between October 1, 2026 and December 31, 2027, one per day. The high-water dates are the king tides of this station; the low-water dates are the best days to see the flats, bars and tide pools.

Questions about these tides

How high does the tide get at Miami?

The highest tide predicted at GOVERNMENT CUT, MIAMI HARBOR ENTRANCE between October 2026 and December 2027 is 3.4 ft above MLLW, on September 30, 2027 at 9:21 AM. An ordinary higher high reaches 2.5 ft (the station's MHHW datum). Onshore wind or a storm surge adds water on top of the prediction, so flooding can start lower than the table suggests.

Does Miami get negative low tides?

Yes. On 213 of the 457 days of the prediction period at least one low falls below 0 ft, the Mean Lower Low Water datum. The lowest is -0.8 ft on January 23, 2027 at 2:22 AM. Negative lows bunch around the new and full moon and uncover the most beach, flats and tide pools.

How long is it between high and low tide at Miami?

About six hours and twelve minutes on average, because the tide here is semidiurnal: two highs and two lows in each lunar day of 24 hours 50 minutes. That is why each tide comes roughly 50 minutes later than the day before. The water moves fastest in the middle two hours of a rise or fall and slows near the turn.

Is high tide later in Biscayne Bay than at Miami Beach?

Yes. The bay fills through Government Cut and the channels, so NOAA predicts Dodge Island 34 minutes after Government Cut at high water, the Key Biscayne Yacht Club 44 minutes after and Dinner Key 54 minutes after, with low water lagging up to almost two hours. Ocean beaches near the cut follow it closely.

Predictions, not measurements: the times and heights are NOAA’s astronomical tide for the station named on the page. An onshore wind, a storm surge or a river in flood can raise the water well above them, and an offshore wind can hold it down. Never use this page to navigate.
